I thinking about getting some Chaetomorpha Macro Algae. I have read that it will prevent unwanted brown algae.

My questions are:

If you place the chaetomorpha macro algae in a sump, should you fully submerge it?

I currently do not have any lighting on my sump, does the chaetomorpha macro algae require lighting? Or, can it live and be helpful without lighting in a sump?

Thanks...

Like any plant it needs light and it needs to be under the water. What type are you getting?

In a conversation I had with Anthony Calfo he recommended chaetomorpha, gracillara, or octodes for nutrient export in a refugium. The reason the it stops the nuisance algae is that the macroalgaes in the refugium/sump outcompete the nuisance algaes for food and end up starving the nuisance algaes out. One of the easiest lights to use for growing macro is any of the plant lights available. HTH, Skip
