Chanchito Eggs

My Oblongum have spawned many times now in the 46g.

They got it right the first time and were good parents. I left the fry in the tank and they lasted a few days after free swimming. When they took the fry around the tank for a swim, they kept things in order for a bit, catching the strays and spitting them back in the group.

All hell broke loose when the barbs started a feeding frenzy and as much as they tried, lost control of the situation. They saved a bunch back to the pit but all were gone within a couple days.

When they lose babies the male gets a little pissed at the female and chases her away. They usually pair back up within a week. They are a very bonded pair.

I had a fry tank ready for their second spawn and siphoned the fry up a couple days after free swimming. I fed them de-encapsulated brine shrimp eggs and they did well.

I was able to raise about 50 after loosing 1 or 2 a day for no apparent reason. The babies grew very slowly. I fed four times a day and changed water every third day.

Since the fry tank is full, I let the last few spawns run their course and once again predators ate they within a few days. I found that the parents are are so unaggresive that with eggs and wigglers/fry they dont defend very well. They let other fish swim very close and dont chase. They are too trusting.

These fish are very tolerent to other fish in the tank as long as its not their own kind.

Last spawn I siphoned some two day free swimming fry and put them in one of those breeder nets in the tank. The babies died within an hour. The parents stay around the breeder for a while, biting at it even after they died. So I'm not sure why thay net did not work.

Good luck...Bill

Same exact thing happened with my net, except I knew of one live fry about a day later. Thanks for all the info. I actaully ahve them in with barbs, 2 loaches, and 3 cories. I will definitely do exactly what you did next time.
