Change Filter Media

Oh, I can;t speak for those that said sponges, but I use Marineland Filter foam, cut it to fit, and then use two rubberbands to hold it in place.

TrickyD, Some HOB filters like Aquaclear use a rectangular sponge to provide a place for bacteria to grow. They usually have two slots, one for a carbon cartridge one for a sponge. If you take out the carbon and replace it with a sponge you now have just doubled your effective bacteria. Some filters like the penguin use a floss filter pad filled with carbon so it is harder to incorporate a sponge.

I suspected as much-Il get rid of the carbon and add another sponge. The tank im talking about is my 21 g, ammonia and nirites are 0, and I do regular water changes/gravel vaccums.

So if I take out the carbon and add another sponge, with the original sponge and sponge on the filter intake tube remaining, the bacteria colony will be okay? From then on I only need to rinse out the sponges every so often?

Thanks for the info guys, maybe I can rig something up as well as only one of mine is an Aquaclear.

Sorry for hijacking ya pisces22, good luck.
