I changed both of my 55 gal from gravel to pool filter sand. I think it looks much better.
The first pic is of my 55 gal with 4 blood parrots and 1 pleco.
The second pic is of my 55 gal with 3 angels, 2 gouramis, 2 dwarf gouramis, and 1 pleco.
The third pic is of my new 10 gal that I set up for my kids. It has 1 serpae tetra, 1 platy (other one died), 1 zebra danio (other one died), 2 black tetras, and 1 algea eater. I used black tahitian moon sand on the 10 gal.

Those look very nice. I wanted the black tahiatian moon sand for my 10 g, but I thought it was too expensive.

I got the moon sand from Petsmart. They were selling it for $24.99/20 lb bag. They price mathced it for me. I printed out a page from ebay that was selling them for $10.99, so that's what I got it for.

I ended up using a 1:4 mix of black sand and "play sand" in my 135, and I love the way it looks. It's very streaky and natural-looking. Oddly enough, it stays streaky (I thought it would eventually get uniformly mixed together) I think because the grain sizes are different, so that currents in the tank move the sand at different rates.

The only problem was that the black sand was the devil to get wet. I washed it for DAYS and it still floated to the surface in clumps, overflowing out the top of the bucket. For this reason a significant amount of it is now mixed in with my yard--most expensive landscaping EVER.
