Chaotic Tank

The problem is that NTD is very contagious, and there is not treatment for it. If the fish get sick, remove them immediately--it spreads when fish nibble on the carcass of a dead fish. Wish you well--this is going to be tough to get through. I would avoid buying any new fish for at least a month from the date of the last loss.

Alright,

Weekend is over.
2 Angels
5 Corydorus 1/3 Otos
3 Rummy Nose Tetra
0 Cardinal Tetras
12 Cochus Blue Tetra

No fish losses over the weekend.

I added a small amount a Aquarium Salt to the tank and the Corys that were looking really shabby (Lost all there Barbels, they have 'grown' back? Is this possible?) have really perked up, I know that salt is not a great idea in the long run but using it to help fight the NTD.
I also added a cure all to see if the will help.

pH 6.9-7.0
Ammonia 0.00 ppm
NitrIte 0.00 ppm
NitrAte 0.15 ppm

Your ph is to high, tetras enjoy a ph no higher than 6.5 and nas low as 5.0 .Your water will be a lot more stable there than 7.0 and above. If your kh is to high you wont be able to lower ph easily.kh should be on 3 dkh, dont go any lower or you can run into problems ,regular water changes will lower kH this slowly . And gH should be 0-1 dkh.Cant remember ppm, sorry.By the sounds of it you will have to buy gh,kh test kits.Using the peat in the filter is fine but may not be enough to lower these chems and can be messy.
You can try seting water in a container with the peat, with peat in a pillow case, airate it for one-two weeks or just stir it everyday or so.How much to use is hard to figure. Start out with 2 large handfuls per 30L of wate (dont forget de-chlorinator) and see how it changes ph/gh.Add this water very slowly during partial water changes or they will acid crash. Also you shouldnt use any sodiums found in most ph adjusters, they dont like them.

Cool, think thats it,hope it helps
p.s Your not keeping fish your keeping water, get the water right your fish will be happy.

Just thought I would update this.
I am still haveing huge losses. The only things in the tank now are a Breeding pair of Angels, they are really happy and 4 rummy nose teras and 3 Corys (Panda) And a Bristlenose. Everything else is dead. I give up ! I am leaving it now.
pH Stable at 7.6

I'm so sorry your fish have NTD - my tank went through a bout after the blackout last year, it was awful.
Glad the pH is more stable now - 7.6 is fine for tetras IMHO. There are many people here on AC successfully keeping tetras outside their 'ideal range'; as long as the parameters are steady and the tank is clean, they'll be fine.

I would tend to let the pH stabilize at whatever the water supply is. ie if you have high kH the pH will be high but very stable. Tetra will acclimatize to a higher pH okay - even up to 8.5. Stable is more important IMO than the actual pH.

The NTD is fatal and the only option, as said, is to destroy any affected fish and try to stop the spread.

But don't give up. Even if you just get some guppies or other species for a while. Some other species can get the NTD, but it's mostly a tetra disease. I lost a bunch of neons to NTD in the past but there is light at the end of the tunnel. unfortunately I don't think that the tetras are the best bred fish around and are a bit on the weak side at the best of times - as are some of the guppies.

Look around and see if you can find some australian gudgeons. You have to use a brick to kill those guys.

Thanks guys,

I have three panda corys, 1 x bristlenose, 4 x rummy nose and an Angel breeding pair. I am going to leave it at that. I had to kill a couple of the fish I though had NTD and so far no other fish have been affected. I hope I have gotten rid of it. All I am going to add now is some more Rummy nosed tetra and some more corys at a much later date.
