hey guys looking for some cheap sand... i was originally thinking pool filter sand but that is too high in silica. Then my thoughts moved to play sand... but is that too dirty?

Any thoughts?.

I just want normal sand really, i do not need any buffering sands or crushed coral, im just going to get normal sand, and seed it with a few cups of LS and obviously it will turn live over time from the LR as well. What do you guys use for sand?

If its possible, id like it to be something i can just go out and buy... not really order on ebay or anything like that, i know that they have all sorts of sands for relatively cheap, but dont really wanna wait for shipping...

Thanks,
Jay

Just a personal preference of mine, but i wont recomend cheap sand to be used in a marine aquarium....i would certainly not want the risk of something going wrong, nor have it on my shoulders that i recomended you a sand that you went out and brought, and got ill effects...

Just my point of view there...

If I was going to use cheap sand, it would be contractors sand available from home depot or lowe's, but like Niko I will advise against using cheap sand in a marine aquarium. There's too much that can go wrong. The other thing is that inert sand has no benefit in marine aquariums. You should use coral sand, aragonite, etc.

Jay ... I have to agree with Niko and the others there about cautioning against using "cheap" sand in an aquarium. Yes, I'm sure there are many people who have had great success going to cheap route, using sand from Home Depot and such. However, when you really look at the large amount of money you'll be spending on your aquarium as it is, the difference in prices between "cheap sand" and good quality sand (not necessarily "live sand") from say a LFS or such is not going to be that huge to warrant taking the risk.

... just my two cents worth :)

Cheers!

i understand what you all are saying, but i find it a tad bit ridiculous that for 150 lbs of sand it cost me 100 bucks, ya know?

Maybe i can search around ebay or something for a good deal, we'll see.

Thanks for the responses.

ok, well i decided to bite the bullet, and i ran out to the LFS and bought marine sand. Cost me 130 bucks for 150 lbs 8(, but hey it should work fine, unfortunately at a price like that you would think i would be getting arag, but they didnt even carry it (crappy lfs) but i was impatient and really wanted to get some sand in the aquarium. 30-40 lbs of LR will be going in tomorrow, and then i can start the cycle, my question is, that its still FW in there and its awfully cloudy from the sand.

Should i wait to add the salt, or does it matter?

Thanks,
Jay

maybe this didnt get seen!?!? i want an answer lol... wheres grins when i need em?

Yes, you should add salt. Should have got your saltinity where you want it before you added the live sand. But it shouldnt hurt much if you do it soon
