If appearance is an issue, window screen frames can be cut to fit and fiberglass screening fit in for a really nice fit. If you use a canister filter, the back corners can be cut at an angle and a miter effect achieved. You can frame around a cut out for the filter. The frame will seem flimsy until after you have the screen splined in place.
Or, consider a power head driven system for one notch in the frame.
