Cheap Top for a Tank

Yeah, I could buy a top for the 5.5 gal, because of the odd size. Then just glue a knob of handle to the top for easy removal, nd you are set. If you wanted to get REALLY fancy, you could have them cut off the last 1/3 of the piece, buy a hinge set, and hinge yourself of lifting flap for feeding and cleaning.

I have a 2 1/2 gallon betta bowl with a split top with no hinge, just be carefull opening it. Used aquarium sealer and a dice for a handle

I would get acrylic cut for the lid or I would use the light diffuser that is found at the local hardware store.

One thing for sure 8 feet doesn't make for may simple choices. If you have an old surf board you can cut it to size, cut some slots and install fixtures. On second thought notch it but don't cut it to size it will have more appeal, Just push down on the back fin to lift one side.

You could always go by a dump or a spot you can get the acrylyc glass and cut it yourself it might just end up free and if not with the price of one glass cover you can get enough for future purposes

Sorry thought I was posting for another thread same subject with 8 foot tank.:y220d:

In your case be carful with extruded sheet acrylic as a support becasue unless your tank opening is really small like a 5 gallon, acrylic has to be thick & expensive, sags and bends with the moisture and temperature difference on each side side. I have two 19" X 48" X 3/8" sheets on my 120 tank rim inside the canopy which support the lights, the acrylic sheets supports nothing only cover the tank surface. If it were not for the tank brace the acrylic sheets would fall into the tank when they bow upward so bad over time.

Mine are just about ready to be turned over (every 2 weeks), Ill take a photo this time and post how bad they bend later.

The hanging light idea is easy and simple with decorative chain and J-hooks installed into wood studs (not drywall only) into the ceiling. The question is how do you feel about an open tank, have any cats LOL.

I have cats and ALL of my tanks are open tops. Not a single loss due to paws and claws yet. Biggest hassle is water loss due to evaporation but that is just an extra push to get off my behind and do the water changes.

Lowe's will cut the glass or Home Depot. I dont think it's tempered though. It shatters very easily and the edges are razors. Use extreme caution with these and try to dull the edges with fine sand paper.

I have also tried acrylic and it sags too much. They had to be flipped every few hours to keep them out of water.
