Cheating with Yellow Labs

I went to the LFS yesterday and they had a tank full of yello labs. Anyhow, I chose 3 of them.....all holding. I have them in a 10 gallon holding tank, hopefully in 2 weeks I will have a whole lot of fry :D :D :D

Here are pics of 2 of them (the 1st 2 are the same fish, the 3rd fish is not photogenic):

hmm one problem i see with that. In the furture are u going to breed them cause then you will need a male instead of all female lol. I done that with a pair of convicts, my LFS didn't notice they had eggs in a pot and they still said for sale so we bought the pair. Seriously some LFS should observe their fish a bit more

I've got a group of yellow labs in my main tank. There is a dominant male in there as well....I am sure he will be very happy when these 3 go in there.

great then u got a fantastic deal, lol.

Probably the only way to be sure you were getting females, but what are you going to do with all the fry? They'll need growout space/tanks, and the females will keep it up after they're moved in with the male...

looks like you hit the jackpot on that LFS visit.

I bought two ob fuelleborni that I thought were holding (I bought them so I'd be sure they're females). I stripped them when I got them home, since I didn't know the father and wasn't going to raise the fry. Turned out that neither was holding, but were only acting like they were. Both were dead in 24 hours. It wasn't stress from stripping, since I only picked them up, looked in their mouths, saw no fry, and put them back.

I'd keep a close eye on your new fish, in case you're in the same boat I was. I figure it was a gill parasite or something. Sorry to rain on your parade! Best case, and they are actually holding eggs/fry, do you feel confident that the father was a lab, too? typically you shouldn't sell fry unless you've actually witnesed the spawn, or the mom was in a species tank. The risk of hybrids is very high with africans.

It was a species only tank, so I am not worried about the father.

I am just about positve that they are holding, the pictures really don't do them justice. Also, they are not eating. Going after the food like they are ready to eat, but then remembering about whats in their mouth! :D

As for keeping it up in the main tank, I've only had fry once out of that tank. I've had holders, but only for a week or so, then they are no longer holding.

I'll keep the fry in the 10 gallon for the time being, doing 100% water changes each day.
