Cherries Not Breeding.

Sorry to hear about your problems I just recently started myself, I just have mine in a 10 gal w/ normal pebbles in the bottom, one rock cave that I had lying around and a sponge filter and mine have had their first set of babies... I keep the water around 75F, but other than that the tank was cycled (used to be a fish overflow tank) and I just used tap water w/ dechlorinator (we have hard water here in Fl). For shrimp I more agree with the set them and forget them side of it, I only feed mine like one time every 2 weeks and like a small part of an algae wafer to keep water healthy and so that they are hungry when I feed them so theres no left overs. Also: tank size for you shouldnt be a problem you are certainly not overstocked and plenty of people breed in smaller and what should be less favorable environments.

My advice, maybe if you have a fully cycled healthy fish tank do a complete water change of the RCS tank and use all water out of that tank and see if maybe that water since you dont mess with it as much is healthier? Or maybe you got a bad stock of RCS if thats possible, just throwing it out there.

Hey everyone,

Good news I found a berried shrimp in my tank this morning!
I was stoked to finally have it work! Anyone who has followed this thread will know how frustrated I have been and all the changes I made. Thank you to everyone who contributed offering me advice and guidance.

I have you to thank for helping me to get it working.

The berried shrimp is one eye. She has been in the tank since I got my 1st batch of cherries. I think she was berried when I got her but dropped most of her eggs.
Fingers crossed she can keep them this time and soon I have a few little cherries buzzing around my tank.

Are you kidding me? Those are AWESOME pictures!
Good luck with the breeding, I have new shrimp and I hope they start to berry soon. :D

An easy way to clean gravel in a shrimp tank is to use a turkey baster. I use it to blow water between the gravel to get the gunk and uneaten food to float up, then suck up the gunk. That way you dont have to worry about sucking up any shrimp or babies. I feed mine Captain Bob's Fishtales "sinking 40" pellets and they go nuts every time I put one in. They all cluster around it, sometimes even fight over it.

:( Sad news, I came home today from work to find the berried cherry dead :(

I did a water change and ill check the params tomorrow to see what might have caused it but she was looking weak for a couple of days.

My story of failure continues.

i have the same problem. i use ro water from my ro unit with a ph of 7.6ish and room temp water and i have never een able to get red cherries to breed nor yellows, snowballs, marbled crays, or crystal reds. i always maintain them with one or two dying (and no berried females) every month and the colony slowly drifts off until i sell them all.

its been roughly two years and im just one of those people that cant breed the easiest thing to breed in the hobby. i run over 20 tanks and have never had this much trouble.

i have no idea but you really must have messed up if your cherries arnt breeding. i keep a backup colony going in a vase in the kitchen, just sand, water, java moss, and 30 cherries. no water movement or water changes. feed once or twice a week. been like that for 9 months and there breeding just as fast as my 20 main breeding tank.

I thought you all were talking about cherry BARBS not shrimp! I freaked out when I read this.. lol :o Hopefully your shrimps start breeding soon though!

Mine havent bred since the copper fiasco. Have some very nicely solidly saddled females, but the males just seem to have no interest. Hoping it was just due to the incident and they will start again in a bit

Hmm. I don't get how they WON'T breed. My cherry tank has around 150 shrimp, 1 platy fry, a heap of MTS, ramshorn snails, a good sized colony of blackworm, heaps and heaps of java moss, a few vals, some crypts, 'medium river sand' (from the local landscaper's) with a little bit of gravel mixed in (for the blackworms), a bit of Indian Almond Leaf, a good sized sponge filter, a desk lamp and all rainwater. This is in a 5g that I have had for around 3 years, so it is very established with heaps of mulm on the bottom. I feed bits of algae that have been scraped off from other tanks, Tetra 'Extreme' algae wafers, some frozen bloodworms occasionally, some Atison's betta staple, some random cichlid food I have laying around, Tetra Tropical Granules, Tetra Tropical Crisps and whatever else I think to try out. This is all in a 5g (20 litre) with no heater on a table in a spare room. I have watched the population grow from the original 5 I bought in June '10 and seen the seasonal population increases and decreases.

I have found that they love picking through the mulm on sunbstrate and through my java moss jungle.

I hope I could help you with my experience and btw, I'm from Brisbane :).

Hey guys another update, I had another shrimp get berried last night, I got home and saw her moult, the guys zooming round the tank, then looked back 30 minutes later and she had berries. Sadly they didnt seem to stick to her swimmerets properly and she lost over 3 quaters of them. :(

So since I have been tinkering I have now got them breeding, I just have to get them to now hatch.

Two berried shrimp so far, one dead and one lost over half the berries. She still has around 5-10 tho so fingers crossed.
