Thinking of adding a group of 8 cherry barbs to our 55 gallon so tried to find out what I could about these fishes. Most say the are shy and very peaceful, but others mention they will bother slow swimmers (like our gourami?)
What is your experience?

I have 1 gold barb and 3 cherry barbs and they are really peaceful. They don't bother my gouramis or the tetras. They just go about on their own chasing each other around the tank (not constantly though). They are really active, my neons and rasboras are just cruising but the barbs are just all over the place.

It is also my experience that they are really peaceful and somewhat reserved. I have a trio in my 29g and while they do cruise around the tank at times, they also do alot of hiding. I've never had problems with nipping.

I have found them to be the least aggressive of all the barbs I have had over the years. Very nice fish that will make a great addition to your tank!

My cherry barbs are very peaceful, and very social. They hide occasionally, but not much. They are almost always out front and never bother any other fish. Make sure to get at least 2-3 females for each male, because the males do like it rough.

My gold and cherry barbs are very peaceful fish. The cherry barbs like to hide and play in the plants. The gold barbs like to play out in the open, but don't chase other fish.

Make sure to get at least 2-3 females for each male, because the males do like it rough.
Very good point. :) I forgot to mention that in my post. I'd definitely get atleast 2 females per male, if not 3. My trio (1m/2f) works nicely.

Not sure what the sexes on mine are but the cherries are always after the smaller gold.

Reybie,

How big are your cherry barbs and how big the golds? Haven't seen golds in the LFS, the cherries look amazing...
