cherry barbs - peaceful or nippers?

The cherries are about 1.25in and the gold is about an inch. The cherries look much "beefier", male maybe?

Male Cherry barbs are solid red....very noticeable. Females are brownish colored and usually a bit plumper.

Mine is actually darker red than this, but here are male (left) and female (right): http://www.aquahobby.com/gallery/e_cherry.php.

I have 7 cherry barbs in my 20 gallon (2/3 full) with 2 small crabs. the barbs have no fear, and are really quick and perky. they play a lot and are curious fish, sometimes 3 or 4 will school around my hand in if I am gardening. they love the get tangled in plants and scout caves. they also seem to really like playing in swallow water with strong current... I have a log that resembles a flume, about 2 inches of turbulent water as it meets the surface, and they play in it all day. they also seem to clean out the crab's hide aways, the crabs have given up on catching them.

really awesome fish

Just added 4 cherry barbs to the 55g. Wanted more but they only had 4. Three female (very very plump, so ready to spawn I guess) and one beauty of a male. Oh, they measure about 2" I would guess...(bit bigger than the black neons).
They are gorgeous. Thanks everyone for telling me how great they are!
