Cherry shrimp

You wanted to know how many to start out with...i started with 15 last april lost 3 down to 12 then they started to breed...ive added maybe 20(+ or -) and now i have over 100. Sometimes you can buy them cheap...the last ones that I got were only like 1.99 a piece...much more than ghost shrimp but ive seen them for 8.99 which is outrageous IMO. I have basic black gravel as sub., a piece of drift wood to keep the water soft and add baking soda to keep the pH high...around 7.8-8.0. I also run a sponge filter with no problems and NO HEATER...room temp (65F-70F) works great. Shrimp have problems with tanks that arent cycled...so you want to cycle the tank before you get the shrimp. When buying shrimp in the stores i'd suggest maybe start out w/ 10-15 depending on your buying power (amount of money you want to spend) make sure to get both males and females...females are super red and the males are almost clear (*most of the time). I have never seen any aggression between my shrimp...I use the little guys as cleaners for plants that occassionally get covered with algae in my planted tank...leave the plant in there for a few days and Its CLEAN. I love my cherries...they get everything to eat from algae wafers, blanched veggies, and shrimp pellets...these little guys are omnivious so they need some meaty substance in their diet. GOOD LUCK and I'm sure if you get the cherries you'll love them...PS I got my sponge filters from www.bigalsonline.com cheaper than Dr Foster and Smiths most of the time
