suggest to start off with at least 10lbs...then, every now and then, when your flush a little, go out and buy a couple of lbs of rock, every 3 months and just keep building it over time...
The recomended ammount for a 30gal tank is 30 - 35Lbs...just so you have a comparison..When you do finally get up to that level of rock, sell your filter on fleebay and pull some money back off it..

k thanks. i still dont know if i will continue with this but if i get the money for it then i will. the cash is basically the only problem...
