Choosing fish for small tank with a betta.

Bumblebee gobies are brackish water fish.

I've done well in the past keeping harlequin rasboras with bettas, and have never seen any fin nipping. However, I don't know whether most stock is tank bred or WC.

I wouldn't put a male betta with a female, it won't end well. Another female betta, Sparkling Gouramis, BB goby, Shrimp, Cories, True Honey Gouramis, etc, etc.[/QUOTE]

That covers the it's complicated part. The planned male betta is going to live seperatly most of the time, only being with the female betta during times apartment people check on me to comply with their one fish tank rule. Anyhow it looks I will not be getting a male betta because I can't find a betta breeder.

I've got a 12g Eclipse with a male Betta and 4 Emerald Cats (close cousin to corydora). They all get along just fine. Occaisionally, the Betta will try to "bully" one of the cats. Since the cats are a pretty "rough & tumble" group (they often sleep in a "dogpile"), when the Betta starts nudging them, they pretty much ignore him (they're banging into each other all the time, anyway). The Betta will push the cat around a while, trying to stir him up, and eventually just give up, and go back to swimming around the topwater.

i dont understand how you can not find a male betta......they are far more readily available than females......... if you want to add a male or even 2 you just have to set up dividers in the tank, they are pretty cheap, also easy to make...if you are looking for a fancier male you can check out aquabid, they have some awsome ones on there

I like the oto idea.

However, BBs live just as long and healthily in FW (unless they're the kind with incomplete bars, which do poorly in FW). Harlequins, IMO, are too active for a tank that small, and seeing as the OP stated she wants calm fish, Harlies arn't much of a choice.

On the male betta. It's because I'm spoiled and used to have breeder bettas. Since I'm going to be limited to one male betta...I'd like a nice looking one. It's not that I can't get male any bettas/

I did end up getting the kuhli loaches, though there were no albino ones( I was guessing they were rare) . I did get the species I was looking for.
Maybe it's just as well snce albinos are weaker.

That's a bit too cozy for Kuhlis (20g (filled)+)

i'm definately no expert at this, and everything i learned was from this forum. but if your saying you basically have a ten gallon tank, isnt that too small for kuhli loaches because people said a 15 gal was too small for kuhli loaches

What I've read recomended was a tank size of 10-20 gal for kuhli loaches.
So if my tank is too small because I was misinformed, then at some point these kuhli loaches will have to be rehomed.
If anyone thinks my tank is too small...how long/ until what size can my kuhli loaches live in there until they'll need a larger tank?. Currently they vary in size from 2" to 2,5".

Of course tank size is not really an issue since I have a thirty gal in my bedroom, on the other hand housing regulations suck around here in that area and I wouldn't want to get in trouble over keeping a few fish.
