Choosing Plants for a 29

I have never successfully kept a planted aquarium because my ph is always way too high, but I've decided to do water changes with 50% water and 50% distilled water so my ph will be around 7. My plan is to have 1 normal 29 light on the top of the aquarium and 1 normal 29 light shining through the back of the tank at plants that will block the light from the fish.


IDK what plants to get though...

Stock:

5 neon tetras

5 guppies

3 nerite snails

3 boesmans rainbow

4 zebra danios

--- I will be getting some cherry shrimp
 
On all my planted tanks I have just normal fl light strips...2 on each which is around 1.5 watts per gallon. I have found that pennywort and crypts do exceptionally well and are very satisfying. They grow well and are very pretty.
I bought a lot of different things from people on this forum that were pretty inexpensive and it let me try some things out to see what worked in my tanks without going broke!!

Hey steph, what size is your tank? You can usually get away with a lower WPG on a larger tank if you want to talk in broad generalities, but its really an innacurate measurement. For example a 4x55w power compact fixture on a 90 gallon is about 2.5 WPG, on a 55 gallon its 4w WPG.
The only difference is the 90 is a shade wider. The resulting growth will be just about identical in the two tanks. The 55 will spill a little more light into the room- but that's about it.

I am not sure what you mean by "normal 29 gallon light" can you give us more details? Specifically type and wattage of the bulb. If you arent sure can you describe it? Is it the big fat florescent or the skinny little ones? How long is the light tube itself?

Ps- I wouldn't put a light on the back. It will shine right in your eyes when you look at the tank.
 
oh, and don't go too nuts about hard water, many plants (including crypts) do very well in hard water.
