my cichlid is an electric yellow and i have them in a 60 gallon. i also have another electric yellow and a peacock. i have a texas cichlid but i am going to get rid of him soon because he is to big for the tank. but one of my electric yellows is like banging his head on the live plants i have in the tank. he is also vibrating vigeriously. what should i do? does anyone ahve advice for me?

thanks for all of your help

matt

Not really sure about the head butting live plants behaviour, but the vibrating behaviour is fairly normal for african cichlids. Based on my past experience with them, they tend to do this when other fish violate their space in the tank.

ya i heard something about that they establish territories in the tank. thanks alot for that info

When you say banging his head, does it look like an attempt to scratch his sides or gills? Like darting real fast against the sharp edges of the plant? If so, its either slight ammonia poisoning, flukes (gill or skin), or lice. There is a chance of another type of problem but those 3 are the most common when displaying what I think he's displaying. hope this helped. Any more info you could provide about the behavior regarding "headbutting" would be helpful.

its almost like he is doing the vibrating motion but on the plant. he does it with his head though. maybe becasue i just put him in the tank today. its a brand new tank.

I've seen my mbuna do a vibrating seizure thing a few times, all fins are fully displayed, he at an angle and almost looks like hes flexing so hard that he vibrates. Ya know when ya flex your face as joke to look really frustrated and it vibrates, I think thats what you can relate it to, hes just flexing his muscle to ward off fish, actually the more i think about it my mbuna does a type of vibrating headbutt but against the glass, almost looking like he wants to ward me away from the tank.
