Cichlid breeding/caring for fry

Day two... they are still spawning... I think he is getting multiple females?? Do they do that?? hit up all the girls at once??

Also, in two weeks, when I strip the female(s) and put fry in their own tank, how often should I do water changes??

Yes, they can do that; they are breeding machines frequently. At least a weekly water change would be adequate.

I know this is not the norm, so I am just sharing my experience for whatever it is worth. (2 cents, probably, lol!) :) I have had very good success rates with my P. socolofi using a more natural method. Around week 2-3, I simply move the holding female to a fairly densely planted 20 gal (they never mess with the plants, as they are holding) and let her spit naturally. I enjoy this easy, more natural method, and think it is less stressful for the mom, even though she is not eating. I keep lots of rocks stacked and that creates many nooks and crannies for the fry. The moms have actually displayed parenting behavior and I've lost very, very few to mom eating them. (Small fry numbers at birth from young moms mean I can actually count them!) I leave mom in the tank for a week or two and I feed her a few times a day to keep her from looking at her babies as food, and when she fattens up a bit, I put her back in the main tank. The only thing I don't like is that she is not eating for a month, but the moms seem healthy enough despite it, and especially after the convalescence in the birthing tank. :)

Good luck!

Hmm.. Ok.. will the fry be able to find their food? I read somewhere that I needed to put them in a tank without any substrate so that they would have an easier time finding their food....??

OK.. Not sure what I will do yet... but I do like the idea of letting the female spit her fry rather than stripping her... Sence I have never stripped fry myself, I am afraid I would hurt her.... When can I move her?? Should I wait until she is closer to her "due date" so I am sure she is going to hold onto them for this long??
