CICHLID DIET

My aquarium includes yellow lab, yellow peacock, aurora, kenyi, venustus and a couple of hybrid. A couple of them love the pellets while others spit them out. Flake food----well they barely look at that anymore. Blood worms they enjoy, but I quit as I read it bloats, and brine shrimp is ok. My question what is what is a good combination of food I can give them everyday to keep them happy and well fed? Also are blood worms ok for a treat?,,,,,say once or twice a week.

ya go get some veggie flake mine eat that crazy and i ve them bbs every month mabye and small fedder guppys when i intro a new fish so trhe take there anger out on it lol good luck with ur foods

With the selection of cichlids you have, you may have to go with a high quality low protein diet (such as new life spectrum pellets or alternative with less than 40% protein content). Spirulina-based flakes will work as well.

The kenyi is predominently a herbivore, a regular high protein diet would ultimately harm it. The Yellow lab can can consume higher levels of protein. The peacock and venustus thrive on even higher protein diets. These will do okay on the diet the kenyi needs to be on.

I give mine NLS pellets 3 times a week, along with SuperSoft spirulina pellets. Every now and then I'll finely dice cucumbers(very fine) or shred some leafy lettuce up and toss it in.

I'm feeding mine TetraCichlid "Cichlid Flakes." Does that cause Malawi Bloat? The protein says 48%. I bought this huge box from Foster & Smith for $30. Is it the wrong stuff?? I have yellow labs, rusties, and a syn petricola.

I was also going to throw in brine shrimp once a week. But I've only had them 2 days so have not done that yet.

Keep it as varied as possible with some live treats once and awhile.

Thanks for the advice all. Today I picked up some spirulina sticks for cichlids and some flake food designed for cichlids. They ate both, but didn't seem real big on them, as there was still some sticks left floating several minutes later. This normally doesn't happen. So far the thing they seem to like the most are the pellets. Oh well.
