cichlid has ich that wont leave.

unfortunatly he gave in to ich today.... Now to start the tank cleaning... ::sighs::

fishie will be missed

Unless there is some other problem in the tank, I would not only not go to great cleaning lengths(m aside from vacumming and water changes), but I would feed the bacteria to preserve the bio-filter and after a week of ich treatment your tank should be devoid of it, and then go right into a new fish. Ich is really pretty easy to eradicate, it is also easy to reintroduce so be wary of that as well. If there is no host (fish) it cannot survive contrary to popular legend.

The reason I said ich medecine is worthless is that on my first ich outbreak I lost a total of 7 fish to the medecine (3 pictus cats, one neon tetra and three common goldfish, one of which actually commited suicide). And the medecine didn't do a thing for the ich (I still had two common plecos and three common goldfish in the tank). I used the salt bath for three weeks, then removed the fish and sterilized the tank with a pound of salt to 5 gallons of 200 degree city water. I have not had ich since (this was about 3-4 months ago)

And because of a small mistake I made my 18 tall had also become infected with Ich. I just used the salt bath for a mere two weeks and cured the Ich.

QCppg

QCppg:

Did you use the med in the correct form for scaless and tetras?

Most probably the half dose method. That is the most common use.

Reason being is that most scaless and tetras cannot handle full doses of most ich meds. They can't handle salt in the water either. So if you didn't dose the tank the proper way for those particular fish. Chances are they died from the meds posioning it rather than the ich itself.

Unlike salt water ich. Just simply giving the fish a bath will not kill the ich on the fish. Infact the only time that ich can be killed is when it has fallen off the fish and is multiplying in the gravel. It is called the Tomite stage.

Here's a good link on ich.

I'm sure that Wetman also has a excellent article about it on his site.
