Cichlid ID please.

I'm fairly certain they're Brasiliensis. It's possible that it's a different species, but they do resemble Brasiliensis to me.

As far as size goes, my male is twice the size of the female, and they are the same age. The males are much larger in this species. If you have one large fish, and two small fish, it's very likely you have one male and two females. The only thing I'm stuck on is the fact that your male doesn't show much of the irredescence that gives the fish the common name of Mother of Pearl cichlid. If you look at my profile I have some pics of my 6" male. I can tell you that our females look nearly identical.

Hmmm, it looks pretty similar to the ones shown here and here. Maybe the fact I had to use flash for the pics drowned out the "pearliness"?. And I just found some pics here of some with the stripes. My small one looks just like them.

So it looks like you all are correct. It's such a shame mine turned out to be very aggressive though. Then again a lot of the articles I've read say they are very territorial pretty much all the time.

After all they are cichlids and with any cichlid there will be aggression, brasiliensis are prolific and will maintain a strong hold on an environment plus they are evasive in nature.

I agree, Pittbull. Cichlids always vary in their aggressiveness. Some friends of mine who have kept them have said that they are by far more aggressive than the other "eartheaters " ( Brasiliensis is no longer classified as a Geophagine, nor is it a true eartheater ). They've tried to house them with others with no success. On the other hand, an angry Convict would shred a Brailiensis to pieces.
If you want a pair, you'd be better off starting with six of that species. Let them pair off naturally and I think you'll have a better chance of getting a compatible pair.

Yep they are aggressive i had them in with some Jurupari at one time and they did a number on them..

Yeah I was originally going to get a couple more but wanted to see how two went in the tank first. But once again that was when I thought they would stay small.

BTW, the big one has settled down in my brothers tank. At first his smaller one had a couple of goes at it but they now swim round together as friends. Hopefully it will stay that way :)

Hey guys, just another update about Big Boppa. Not only has he settled in to my brothers tank. But it seems he's now a doting dad. Unbelievable! Gone from a fish killer to loving parent in a couple of weeks.
