I had this guy in my tanks for a while, never knew what he was. I brought him in and sold him to my lfs cause I had to move. The african specialist guy there said that he had never seen these color patterns and guessed that it was a mutt. Anybody have any other ideas?

peacock? mabey? or like the guy said "mutt"? mabey a jewel/frontosa that would be cool.

JewelXfront is highly unlikely considering that they don't come from the same regions or even simliar water conditions.

I don't know many Malawi's, which is what he/she appears to be. You might want to try checking out cichlid species profiles. I would try http://www.amateurcichlids.com

DEFINATELY not a trewavasae. Does it have a 'nose'??

I am going to guess some sort of Afra. Try looking at different Cynotilapia Afra species at this website: http://www.malawimayhem.com

My Afra "Yellow Blaze" looks a lot like this when his colors aren't on display.... although this one might be a hybrid of two variants of Afra.

Could possibly be a Pseudotropheus or something along those lines as well...
Hard to tell by the angle of the pic but i would for sure say a mbuna.
