I have a 55 gallon aquarium with 5 fish: peppered cory catfish, plecostomus, gold gourami, red fire dwarf gourami and an opalene gourami. the tank is still young so I don't plan on adding new fish for a while but I was wondering if there are any cichlids that are peaceful enough to get along in my tank, specifically with the gouramis. I read that some people have had luck with rams and apistogrammas in a community but they could get aggressive when breeding. I suppose all this assumes that both species don't require different pH and hardness etc... Any ideas/advice would be greatly appreciated. This is my first post so I wasn't sure where to ask this question, whether in a gourami or cichlid sub forum so I felt the newbie forum would be best. If this was the wrong place to post then I have an excuse b/c I'm a n00b! :)

I doubt the rams or apistos would get very near the gouramis since they tend to inhabit different strata of the tank. I would be more cautious given a mix of three different gourami species...they don't always play well together.

Also keep in mind that corys are very social fish, and should be in a school. I consider 5-6 individuals (preferably of the same species) to be the bare minimum.

Thank you very much. I've noticed the gold and opalene gouramis tend to stay together and to the top of the tank and the red fire dwarf towards the bottom so I've been keeping an eye on them making sure there's no bullying. I thought about getting a few corys but I wasn't sure if I should for a newish tank but I will get some more.
