Has anyone kept cichlids, such as firemouths, salvini, or jack dempseys with australian rainbows? The rainbows are about 4" in size. I don't know if the rainbows would be just a dither fish or if the cichlids would go after them. They would be in a 40g long tank.

The rainbows will shred the fins on cichlids or other fish the same size or smaller.
I gave my rainbows away because they were eating my dempseys fins.(ebjd's were same size as rainbows)

Wow, I was figuring it the other way around! Sounds like the rainbows might be able to hold their own.

it would be something worth trying out, but in a tank that size there's no options for escape (for either species of fish). if you want the jd, start with at least 75g.

Forgot to mention one other thing - temps. Most bows really do better in low to mid 70's. So, if you do try mixing them, make sure you don't try it with a cichlid that likes upper to low 80's...

no way man, ive seen in a 150 gallon cichlid tank with 3 blue rainbows and 1 other red one(dont know the name) and they got freaking murdered!! they were teared apart within a few weeks, only 1 survived. He was taken out of the tank.
