The rainbows are already in a 40g long. This would just be an option tank for cichlids that are getting beat on by larger tank mates, like jags, GT, or Oscars. I keep the water temp at 78 degrees for the rainbows and they do fine. This temp should be fine for the cichlids also. I think the rainbows are too fast for any cichlids I would put in with them, I just wonder how the bows would do with the stress.

Stress leads to columnaris with bows - usually starts with white lips. 'Cichlids' can mean a lot of different fish with different temperaments. I'd be careful mixing in that particular bunch.

My roommate had three three inch Bosemani Rainbows in a 45g with lots of rocks and seven Yellow Labs (Labidochromis Caeruleus) at 1.5-3 inches. It worked fine for three or four months, and then the labs killed a Rainbow. The remaining two got moved out after.
I think the attack happened because the Labs had grown a bit, and it succeeded because there were too few rainbows to properly spread aggression.

Thats the first I've heard of rainbows being nippers. I've kept them for a while now and haven't had a problem, in a community tank. Are they just fin nippers to more aggressive fish lisk cichlids or are they that way all the time?
There are many different rainbows out there... I have gl. wanamensis, m. praecox, b. madagascariensis, m. lacustris, and m. catherinae. The madagascars are the most aggressive, but haven't nipped fins.

I have aussie turqs and they are in with some peacock cics and they do just fine. They have a small amount of chasing each other but nothing bad. If you do it i would recommend you introduce them at the same time if possable. to prevent any pre existing territory issues.
I may not have a choice as some of my cichlids in my 120g may need to be relocated in the near future. I think the australian rainbows could probably handle themselves, but you just never know. If I try it I'll have to keep a close eye on the situation.
