I have a 55 gallon sitting aound. A buddy of mine is getting rid of all of his cichlids. He has electric blue johonnas, arawnas, and yellow rams. My tank has a sand substrate with a few pieces of red slate. Is there any harm in the sand for these type of fish?

certainly don't belong in the same tank. Melanochromis johanni (electric blue johanni) is an African cichlid which requires hard, alkaline water. i don't know what you mean by 'yellow' ram but you're probably referring to the gold ram Microgeophagus ramirezi, a south american cichlid which wants soft, acid water, grows to only 2 inches and will be eaten by an arowana. morevover, this is a very sensitive species and will do poorly in a 'new' tank. there are several 'Arowana' species: OsteogLossum bicirrhosum, African Arowana - Heterotis niloticus, Asian Arowana - Scleropages formosus. all of them grow to over two feet and cannot be maintained in a 55 gallon tank.

I thank everyone for their comments. I know that I am incorrect on the yellow rams (or maybe it was called yellow lab?). He calls them something else. Anyhow, he has had these fish in the same tank for the past years. I know this for a fact. I will try to post some pics of these sometime soon. I am ony going to care for them untill I find new homes for them. My buddy is going to build a reef tank. My real goals are for my tank to solely house clown loaches in the next few months.
arawnas for free? yes!!!! take the fish. move or sell the rams. same for the johnni. rams: too small Johannis: too aggresive. arawanas are very expensive and by all means keep them

We have a Black Arrowana in with our Africans, and she pretty much leaves everyone alone....mind you, there is enough room that everyone has their own space. I've only seen her eat one, and I think it was by accident....they both went for a pellet at the same time...the African lost....
What do you feed them and what are the water conditions...? Since they both are very different for each fish.
