What cichlids? Kribensis are worth mentioning and can be kept in community tank except during spawning season.
american cichlids are cooler. unfortunately i didn't know that until after i set up my aquarium. =[

I have african cichilds in a 55 gal tank with fine sand. I have been using whisper filters but my second one in 6 months just broke. it seems that the fish are kicking up the sand and its getting into the filter and its causing the mechanical piece inside to break. What other kind of filter would you guys suggest. Should i get a cannister filter?

i've been really happy with my canister filters.. i'm glad we made the switch. especially because we went to petsmart.com and printed out the online price and took it to the store and, by doing so, saved $100
although, you could also just raise the intake for the HOB filter and see if that helps.

Pantyhose over the intake. Not the best looking thing in the world but it works. Probably wouldn't look bad if you got black pantyhose actually. Or you could just go canister or wet/dry which would be my preference.
