I'm about to finally get my lights, which will be a 36" 6x39 watt T-5 setup. I know clams really need MH to do the best, but are there any clams that could do well under this sort of lighting? The depth of the tank is about 16" (more or less).

Derasa and hippopus shoulddo well under T5. They tend not to need as much light. Not as striking as maximas or croceas, but much hardier.
I have a 60 gal (depth 16") tank with Power Compacts, four 96watt bulbs (2 actinic and 2 white), which comes to 6.4 watts per gal. I have a Derasa and a Crocea which I've had for about four months. Both are doing great! I keep the lights on for 12 hours per day, with the actinics 14 hours per day. Everybody says that Crocea's really need MH, but I'm not a believer. We'll see with time.
