I'm pretty sure thats one reason that so many people get sick from eating mullosks. The only mullosk I'll ever consider eating is a scallop and thats on a rare occasion. Other than that its clam chowder 'cause you can't really tell what you're eating lol. I just don't understand how someone could slurp down a slimy raw oyster and say its good....yuck!!

Also because clams and mussels and such are filter feeders. So they will concentrate any toxins or poisonous single-celled critters that are present in their water.

Just to let you know, "scallops" are often just pieces of skate and ray wings that have been cut with a cookie cutter. Unless you see the shell, it's very likely not a scallop. Skates and rays are all too often caught in huge numbers as by-catch in other fisheries, so at least they're going to some use, instead of being tossed over the side dead :(

EDIT: I told my 67 year old (don't tell her I told you her age lol ;) ) and she cut me off before I could finish what I was saying and said "what? that they cut it out of sharks and rays with a cookie cutter? Thats a myth, plus they can't do it anymore because its illegal."

Now I must say that my mother is quite naive, and that just because its illegal it doesn't mean that they're not going to do it anymore. But still...does that really happen?

yes, it does. I'm a marine ichthyologist so I know. It's not illegal, as many sharks (and their relatives the skates and rays) are not all protected by law. There is simply too little information on their life histories at the moment to justify listing each one as a protected species. That's why my lab (the Pacific Shark Research Center) is working to build a database of life history characteristics of as many elasmobranchs as possible. We want to clarify age and growth, reproduction, diet and ecology.

by the way, a common fish used for "fish n chips" is actually dogfish sharks. kinda scary, huh? but dogfish are so plentiful that they're not considered threatened.

in decades past, many sharks were also commercially harvested for their liver. It was marketed as "cod liver oil" and is high in vitamin A. Now they mostly synthesize synthetic vit A, but if your mum ever took cod liver oil, it was probably a shark.

Wow, well my mom still doesn't believe and she stills says its illegal, but I definitly beleive it. I'll just let her think what she wants since I know I can't change her mind anyways lol.

I've learned that, especially with parents, it's best just to let it go ;)
 
The clams at the supermarrket are in fact alive and I too would be worried if they weren't when purchasing them. If the clams you see are dead, there is defiitely something wrong. My sister bought some once and put a small one in her sw tank and it did ok for a few weeks... she took it out though because she was afraid of the havok it could cause.
