LFS had these things, almost look like a cross between a catfish and a loach (at least to my brain)... long body, white and light brown (i'd say burnt sienna if I was in a box of crayons), but no one in the store knew their temperment or their maximum growth size - they were about 2 in long each in the tank.

I also can't find anything at all on the internet about them.

These guys mislabelled or something? Or does anyone if they go by a different name?

Could it have been Clarias? They are now banned in the USA now (but available in Canada), but are large, graceful, omnivorous catfish. They are available albino, normal, and pied coloring - the last being the best looking IMHO, but the one that I kept for many years was albino.

Chances are that's it... and at 2 ft, probably not the kind of fish I'm want :) (at the moment, at least)

Because they were approaching the Everglades in Florida and major predators of native fish. They are also in part air breathers, and in humid weather can cross overland to other bodies of water.

I love Canada. Either the winter will kill them off, or the native fish will eat them. Piranha are no match for a sturgeon or a muskee
