Is there any maintenance that can be done on an HOB filter? I noticed the other day that water was spilling over the inlet on my HOB filter, so I replaced the filter media. All was fine for a couple of days, and now its spilling over the inlet again.

Is there anything I can do to get the filter working any better? short of simply replacing it with a better filter.

If its getting stopped up that quickly, then it sounds like you need some more filtration on the tank.

Speaking of more filtration will it hurt to put more than one filter in a tank? Not that Im going to do it, I was just wondering?

Actually you should have more than one, if one filter fails you still have a filter running with bacteria, we have 3 on the 80, 2 on the 29, 2 on the 45, you could have as many as you like, you can't over filter, to much current flow may blow the fish around tho.........:)

what about for a 10gal and a 20GAL? My 10gal only has a slot cut out for 1 filter. What type of filters do you prefer...bio-wheel, bio-logial, or what?

Ok, reading online it appears my filter is basically junk............. so time to get a new one (there are only 2 fish currently in the tank)........... is the Aquaclear filter any good?

Penguin 200 or AC-50 for the 20 gal. Penguin 100-150 or AC30-50 for the 10 gal. both are good filters, on a planted tank the bio-wheel type filters may absorb the beneficial C02 needed for plants..........:)

what about for a non-planted tank is a bio-wheel better or worth the price difference? Also how often should you replace a filter cartlige (sorry horrible speller)? Or just change it when it gets dirty?

I like the Aquaclear HOB filters as well as the bio-wheel filters put out by Marineland. It is just a matter of preferance since they both will work equally well. As far as a bio-wheel filter for a planted tank, I have a penguin 350 on my 25 gallon fully planted tank and everything is fine. It will also work just fine in a tank that is not planted up with real plants.

As far as when to replace the cartridge, you do not to have to actually replace it until it is literally falling apart. When you do a water change you can rinse the cartridge out in used tank water that you have just removed from the tank and then replace it back into the filter. Once it starts to fall apart completely, then you can go ahead and replace the cartridge with a new one in the filter slot.

Hope this helps.
