clean up crew

The iodine idea hasn't really been proven yet. You should also be adding enough to your tank from the foods you feed . You also really don't need halides for lots of the shrooms ," a number of them will melt into a nice puddle of goop under 6500k trust me :( ", for a number of them you could use a bulb designed for plants. They are very forgiving and you could have what you want for less than $20. Just keep them in the upper portions of the tank and research your species. I know that this will work for a fact as I've done it in the past.

chris, do you know the species names that do well under low light (plant bulbs)? thanks again. :)

If know body mind I’d like to expand the question. How many of these cleaning critters should you keep? I have a 125gal coming on line in the nest couple weeks I’ve heard numbers like 100 or so assorted Hermits 50 to 60 Snails a couple Goby’s maybe a star or two. This sounded I bit much to me. Also will the shrimp compete with any of these varmints?

As per your request http://www.reefcorner.com/SpecimenSheets/mushrooms.htm and some of these need a little more light but wow http://www.fishpalace.org/Ricordia.html
So you really can have lots of variety. They will let you know if they aren't getting enough light by getting longer and clearer around the base. I'd start out in the upper portions of the tank and then experiment as your population grows. The only thing I'll say in the negative is these guys will very likely take over your tank so if your planning on upgrading your lighting in the future give it some thought.
Les," get as many types of snails as you can if your doing a reef I'd go with more like 100 to 125 of them depending on the type. If you get mostly turbo's then reduce the numbers to your recomendation. I'd skip the goby and use inverts that will come off the live rock. Hermits are not one of my favorite critters a bunch of them can really be terrors IME. I wouldn't get more than 20 or 30 for that sized tank and make sure that they are a variety of red reef hermit of blue legged hermit. It will be a whole lot easier to add more if they aren't doing the job than to take some of them out when they start eating each other and your snails. Also give them a variety of empty snail shells to move into or they will make their own. This is both IME and IMO so please take it as such .
