after doing some more searching and research I've decided to just let him have the whole tank to himself.

Just use a syphon. I have found with my oscars they eat ALL of their tank mates. Even snails that they will pluck right off the glass...I also use a power head to help move the waste around. The oscars do stalk it and knock it off the glass from time to time but it is very efficient. Good luck
