there isnt a rule for how many shells...just toss in a good hand full of different shapes and sizes.
and snails grow their own shells...the shell is secreted buy the mantel and grows over time...this is why good calcium is required for them. then when the snails die hermits take the empty shells...or kill the snail and take the shell.
