Cleaning Bio Sponges

I have a Whisper 60 filter and it appears as if the bio sponges are preventing proper water flow. With new filters in place water is still coming out of the "your filters are dirty" middle portion of the filter. When I remove the sponges the water flows properly. I am wondering since I've rinsed them out with water and squeezed prety much everything outta them I can and it all has no effect. What is the best way to clean these sponges? Does anyoen else have this problem?

what other biological media do you have? i have multiple filters and bio-wheels so i just spray them in the sink with the sprayer. even better, i use my hose attachment in the cellar and i've got serious pressure to clean them with.

i mostly do this with my emperor cartridges, but i've done it with the bags and most other media too. the key here is redundancy, i never do it to more than one filter at a time. i also do it at water change time so there is dechlorinator in the fresh water i just added.

There is a standard filter than a seperate holder that contains a removable sponge.

hi xclaw.i basically do what ewok does.im using regent filters in one large tank.i use the hose sprayer outside to clean the cartridges.had them same cartridges for several months now.i also have bio max balls in a bag that i hang in the regent filter box.i never clean the bio max balls..if i was going to i would use water which had already been de chlornated.i wash my ac sponges in water which has been de chlornated also.i might add i use bio max in all my filters.some people wash the sponges in siphoned aquarium water which is fine also.allwet.......

Thankyou for the input. I'll try cleaning them again with a higher water pressure and see if that does the trick.
