i get diatoms all the time in my big guys' tank, on the glass, on the decor, on the filter intakes, everywhere! lol. diatoms have been coming back again and again ever since switching to play sand some time ago (more than 6 months but less than a year). i'm pretty sure it is due to the silicates in the sand and they are taking their time leaching out of the sand. yay me! lol.
i've taken the large plastic resin 'wood' pieces out and scrubbed them down with tap water during a water change and i do that for the plastic plants in there too (see my avatar). no issues at all with mini cycles or fish stress.
tank decor (other than substrate) i think would host the minimum amount of beneficial bacteria, especially when compared to the amount of BB your filter media or substrate would host.
