Hey all! I was wondering what those you who have sandy substrates do when the junk gets all mixed in with the sand?? I have noticed that over the course of time, my sand has developed a "dirty" look to it and really would like for it to be nearly clean. I try to stir u the sand when possible to try to bring the junk to the surface, but was wondering if their was a different method. Thanks!

I usually just slightly place the gravel-vacuum (though I guess we would now call it the 'sand-vacuum') over the sand and pull what detritus I can up. You will pull up some sand. Others use a small filter on the end of the vacuum.

I use a small mesh net - with approximately 2mm holes - to scoop sand, the sand drops straight back to bottom, and most muck stays in net - the rest of muck doesnt drop back down as quick as sand, and so is on top to just be siphoned away. Thats the best Ive been able to come up with after many trial-and-errors.

Hope it helps,
Thom.
