Cleaning my plants

whenever i get a slight touch of algae on my plants i just rub it off with my fingertips, let it get sucked into the filter, and then clean the filter media. mind you, i rarely get algae and it is a miniscule amount, since my cories seem to love the stuff and eat it up for me! lol.

I tried to do that with my Anubias but the leafs get a little damaged. Btw, the amount of algae I have is small. Hope the Excell and the UVs will help.

Curious how your U.V.'s are working for you. I installed a variety of them about a week ago and they all seem to be working great. The water in my planted tanks is perfectly clear. It was clean before but now it's invisible. The algae on my filter tubes however isn't effected at all.

Called Seachem, I use their products pretty exclusively to avoid compatibility issues, because when testing my phosphate level it was completely off the chart. Doh! I have been using their Neutral Regulator in response to a pH spike in my city supplied water. General hardness and Carbonate quadrupled so I tried using the N.R. to get it back to neutral. What I didn't get from reading the label was that it uses phosphate buffers, so in higher concentrations of carbonate it is working against itself in trying to drop pH. Then I had to add Acid Buffer to break the bond of the carbonate and add N.R. to lock it in. Net result has been this ridiculous increase in my phosphate levels, which is apparently like ringing the dinner bell for that algae. Had a few choice words for Seachem. They actually claimed that it's on their website and not on the label because they ran out of room on the label. Like their stuff but that was the dumbest thing I've ever heard from a tech. support person since one that told me to upgrade to Vista.

Quit using the N.R., did a couple of water changes, quit fertilizing, reduced light, installed U.V. and bought some mollies for my 72 bow front - the synergy seems to be working - not quickly, but working nonetheless. The U.V. definitely knocks out any of the floaties but the food source has something to do with the phosphate levels and water make up. Grab a drip test kit, call the lab at your water treatment facility, and look at the ingredients in your ferts and water conditioners.

Serendipitous post. Just as you were asking about it I started to have the same problem. Good news is I never kept mollies and these guys are pretty cool. They never stop moving and already started spawning behavior.

I did install my 2 uvs about 10 days ago and water looks great. Also my algae are starting to disappear from a uv/excel combination, imo.

My algae are almost gone. Excel, lights 8hrs (4 on, 4 off, 4 on) and reduce feeding.
