Hi there,

I am in a bit of a predicament. I am receiving some fish in the near future and need to organise somewhere to house them. I have a large fishtank, half of which is currently housing a barbel and my sick S.nigriventris (http://www.aquariacentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=66688)

I want to use this tank to house my new fish and was wondering whether I needed to sterilize it or not. If I do, how do I go about doing it? If I use fishtank water and filter brushes from a mature tank how long will it need to cycle before I can add the new fish.

Thanks

Its never a bad idea to sterilize an old tank prior to setting it up and cycling it. The simple way to do this is to fill the tank up with 1 cup of bleach per gallon of water and letting it sit for a few hours. Drain the tank and rinse it very well. Then let the tank airdry. Once the tank is completely dry you can fill it with water and doubledose on the dechlorinator. Add the old filter stuff and fishless cycle it. With a bacteria innoculation it could take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks depending on many different factors. As soon as the tank tests perfect, it is ready for the fish.
