I came home last night after the woman who cleans our house had visited. It never occurred to me before, but this week my kids had gotten my 55 gallon's tank glass very dirty with all the watching the new fish and touching the glass.

Anyway, she cleaned the tank glass, and I can only assume with blue window cleaner product.

My question, for the future, is this. Does anyone make a product designed specifically for cleaning the oustide tank glass? What do you clean the oustide tank glass with? I really would prefer to buy a bottle of some product. It would just be the easiest way to make sure she remembers to use the right thing.

Has anyone tried this product?

If you buy any of that stuff, just take the lid off a smell it.

It'll be very familiar.

It's vinegar.

Seriously, I paid 4$ for Python aquarium glass cleaner and all it is is vinegar and some yellow (looks like) dye.

Just put some vinegar and water in a spray bottle and go to town.

While I realize she figured it was her job and doing what she was supposed to do -- her intentions were good -- If it were me, I would tell the cleaning woman to never touch my tanks again, or spray anything around them, and that I would look after them myself. She may take it upon herself to clean some other part of it without your knowledge and kill all the fish at the same time. That's just me, tho.

As long as you aren't spraying window cleaner on the glass you should be okay.I spray it on a paper towel, away from the tank, and then wipe clean my glass.

I use vinegar for the outside glass. It's cheap, good for the environment and works great. No streaking, etc. It was recommended to me by Big Al's (they didn't even try to sell me something!)

I agree with Roan and Mr. Bubbles. I use diluted vinegar.

used tank

does anyone have any recommendations for cleaning an old tank that has had cichlids in it previously? There are hard water stains all over this tank and other crusty materials. Would vinegar and aquarium salt do the job? What would you use to scrub this crap off?

If you let full-strength vinegar sit on the stains for a while then use a glass scraper most if not all will come off.

I use good old h2o and the "wax on wax off" technique.
