cleaning purigen

Hello:

I just soaked my purigen in bleach and water as directed. I only left it in there for about 4 hours and it is snow white. I then rinsed it really good until the bleach smell was gone. I am now soaking it in Start Right (the chlorine remover) and water. Do I need to use the buffer product? When I purchased the purigen, all I was told was that it was easy to clean. Then I read that I need ChlorGuard and a buffer. Will it be safe to use cleaning it the way I did? Thanks so much.

The only reason to use the buffer is to counter act the high alkalinity of the chlorine/bleach used to clean it. If your tank is large or high PH, I wouldn't worry about it. If you have a neutral-low or small tank then you need to stabilize the PH of the purigen some way.

I am using it in a 55 gallon tank.

After the bleach treatment, i soak the purigen in a dilute solution of white vinegar for a few hours. i next wash the purigen in water to get rid of the vinegar.
