Has anyone used the Microbubble airstones by Rena?

I have the 2inch and I would like to know how ot clean it. They apparently last forever but can be re-used (so I'm assuming cleaning?).

How does one go about cleaning them? They are ceramic I believe. Mine is just covered in brown stuff and a toothbrush hasnt worked.

If I remeber correctly, the directions suggest soaking the stone in a 1:1 bleach mixture overnight and then rinsing very thouroughly before putting it back in the tank. If you're not comfortable using bleach, you could try white vinegar.

I have a bunch of the Rena Microbubblers. I have really hard water, though, so they all clog up and just become regular bubblers :D

Anyway, I've used the bleach before. That worked OK, but just got rid of the color on the outside, mostly. They also recommend hydrogen peroxide. That, or vinegar will help dissolve the calcium deposits that are blocking the pores.

I don't know if you'll ever get it back to "micro"-bubbling, though  I personally didn't enjoy the tiny tiny bubbles.
