Clogged Fluval Hose

I'd also ditch the ribbed hoses for non-ribbed. I have seen some that are ribbed on the outside but smooth on the inside - you get the anti-kink benefit of the ribs but not the downside of having them catch all sorts of junk inside them. Just not sure where to buy it, the only time I've seen them was a few 1' pieces that came with my pond filter.

cf, the Fluval 405 I currently have on my 90 gallon tall Lake Tanganyika used to be on my 125 gallon. As you know, this 125 long tank is moderately planted .... it did a very admirable job given that frankly, it was not enough filtration for a planted tank of this size. It wasn't long before I bought the FX5. The tubing on the Fluval 405 was constantly getting coated with debris. Every time I primed, I got a cascade of plant bits back into the tank (which I minimized by placing a net over the output before switching back on). I solved the problem in the interim by performing more regular cleaning of the mechanical foam in the filter (2-3 times a month) and by rinsing the hosing out once every 2-3 months.

I have never had any problem of this nature with the FX5... the flow is too strong to allow junk to accumulate on the ribbed tubing sideawalls

.... beast filtration.... LOL

Ive had 2 different strainers and one has the ball inside it the other doesnt. I decided to go with the one without for the very reason stated above by cfsin.

My balls get stuck too. They need to be cleaned once in a while of sticky residue. Otherwise the pumps don't prime easily.
