a closed loop is having a water pump on the outside of the tank with an output from the tank and an input back into the tank for circulation. I like it because I don't have to have as many unsightly powerheads inside the tank.
It differs from an overflow in that there's no secondary container to pump from. Water literally comes from a bulkhead in the tank, is siphon/suctioned into the pump intake, and is immediately returned. Nothing to flood, just static water (aka, not moving from container to container). Overflows and sumps are open loops.
Ah ok so it's basically just to help provide the water movement in the tank. It's amazing how often you read something without knowing exactly what is.
