Cloudiness in water/filter stopped up...possibly overfeeding?

Okay...here's the list...the best I could scrounge up:
1 - Swordtail
1 - Tiger Barb
1 - Algea Eater
2 - Plattys
2 - Gouramis
2 - Not Sure (they are both about 1 1/2 inches long and are silver with black stripes going all the way down their body)
1 - Not sure (about 3-4 inches long, very orange with black fins)

hoo-boy...
1 tiger barb is bound to cause trouble to the others. They can be quite nippy if kept alone and not in a group to dither out any distractions (other fish). Tiger barbs should be kept in groups.
Platies and a swordtail, I'm surprised they sold one swordtail... but with Platies, I think they're ok... it's the others that are a problem.
The algae eater, what kind...? Pleco, siamese algae eater, chinese algae eater, otocynclus <sp?>...?
2 gourami's.. what kind, the amount of different types vary, it's important to know what they are...

the silver fish, is the line horizontallu (nose to tail) or vertically, top to bottom?
If they are going from nose to tail, are they "danios"?
The black fish is more than likely a rainbow shark.
A lot of these fish are ok in a 10 gallon but certainly not if kept together.... look these up and let me know if I am correct on the types.

(your sludge is definitely due to bio-waste material)

ON the algea eater...I think it's a chinese...I'm just going on pictures here though.

On the gouramis, not sure. One is orange/yellow with long "whiskers" and the other is blue with orange/pink fins.

The two striped ones are indeed danios.

You said the "black fish"...I don't have any black fish. I have one that is "very orange with black fins" though.

I guess the lingering question is "how do I get rid of the bio-waste"...which I'm afraid the answer might be something like "get rid of some fish"...

sorry, I got the black fish backwards... hmmm.. I'm guessing that could be a velvet red waigtail swordtail... but 3 to 4 inches long... can't be that...for the life of me, I can't figure out what that could be...

how to get rid of the bio waste is as you dread. Some of those fish have to either go back or you need a bigger tank. In the meantime, test the water.... I need to know what your ammonia, nitrite and nitrate levels are. Your best friend with all these fish is water changes and gravel vacs. How many times do you change the water per week?

you want to get that ammonia down to zero and the nitrate down to 20-30... did you cycle this tank before these fish were put in there?

In order to get those levels down, a more strict maintenance schedule in needed. Once you get your levels right and know where they can be stabilized as far as water changes are concerned, then you can rest. However, some of those fish, still need to go unfortunately or you will be exhausted at all the work it will take.

You probably just have way too many fish in there for the filter to keep up, which might cause the water to cloud up like that. You should probably pick just a few of the fish to keep and bring the rest to the pet store, or get a few more tanks. A single gourami would be cool, but would need more than a 10gal. your best bet would be the platies/swordtails combo, peaceful community fish. If the algae eater is a CAE, I'd get rid of that as well, they cause trouble when they get older.

As far as the orange fish....this is a wag platy

if its not that, this would be my next guess...

although they're more yellow than orange, I'm a bit colorblind. However, if it looks similar to that shape, it might be another type of african cichlid and in that case you should get rid of that as well. They have specific needs and arebest kept in species tanks.
