You do need your own test kit, its a must. Your store is terribly uninformed, maybe they were hurtin to sell some fish? who knows lol.
You should be doing frequent water changes and testing parameters daily to monitor the cycles progression. Fish waste is feeding the cycle so keep him in there, try not to overfeed to much.:perv:
