Cloudy water after fish died.

ah yes I've read about how its basically a food chain sort of effect only on a smaller scale, but I always wondered how to tell if you have bacteria (which now I know). I probably knew at one time or just don't know now because im sick and hopped up on cold medicine :grinyes: . Thank you all for the information. My tank is looking a little better I'm sure in another week when I do another 50% change it should look almost perfect.

Just be aware, that perfect-looking, clear water can still have toxic levels of ammonia and nitrites in it. When you are feeling better, get a liquid test kit as star-rider suggested. It is important to keep both ammonia and nitrite below .25, as anything above this can be lethal. Even .25 is toxic and damaging to fish - in an established tank, both should remain at 0.

Good luck and keep us posted!

I'm going to order it online as soon as I get some answers. Might as well ask about other things while I'm here.

do these work well? does anyone have one?
Also I have bloodfins. 4 I got look like these
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bloodfin
but 6 look different. They are smaller and have black spots where the ears would be if fish are anything like us...I could be wrong but they seem to be schooling together even though they are different. woops almost forgot to ask my question hehe. The smaller ones hang out on the bottom but don't seem to pick anything off the ground. Do I need pellets for them or are they getting enough from what the guys at the top don't eat?
Another thing I just thought of. My freshwater shrimp molted I guess you would call it. There was an empty shell that looked like someone ate my shrimp from the inside out. Do I have to remove those right away? Will they have the same effect as a dead fish?

When ever you have a cloudy tank, it is really good to run a spare sponge filter. The kind that is fixed inside the tank. This will get rid of the stuff within the hour. Wash this filter thoroughly afterwards.

Like this(though not this exact one):

You can keep it running inside the tank as backup filtration. If you ever need to quickly cycle a tank, just put it inside and it will be cycled.

Glass catfish are schoolers who grow to 4 inches long each, so I would try and find some way to give it to an LFS because there is no room in the tank for a school, I believe:/

Cloudy green water? Sounds like an ammonia and algae spike.

Thats a lot better price. Sounds like it would be a nice thing to have around too. oh yeah...shoulda done more research on that before I got it. I'll return it as soon as I can. I saw someone on the forum said you always want a bigger tank and I thought I would be happy with a 20, but now I see what they mean.
