Cloudy water issues...

I'd order the test kit on-line, or take the bus to a pet store. Could you get a friend to give you a ride? It is important to have a test kit when cycling, otherwise you don't have any idea what is going on with your fish. Also, I'd up the water changes to 50% twice or more a week. Optimumly, you should test the water every day and change it until the nitrites and ammonia are at tollerable levels.

As I said before, Dwarf gouramis are not the best fish to cycle with, as they are fragile--if you are attached to him I'd get a test kit and use the water conditioner in FREQUENT water changes or he will probably be in trouble.

Ideally you want to keep the ammonia under .25 ppm, the nitrite under .5ppm, and the nitrate under 20ppm. If any of the levels get above that it is time for a water change of at least 20%. I seriously would not consider cycling with a gourami . They just are not that hardy and can sustain serious damage to thier gills.I would try some danios. They are hardy, active and a hoot to watch. They also handle the cycling process very well. I would suspect that the cloudy water is from a bacterial bloom and is part of the natural process a tank goes through while it matures and creates the bacteria that is necessary for a healthy aquarium. It will probably go away on its own but you can help it along with water changes. Seriously consider getting a test kit so you can at least know what is going on inside your aquarium.

Hope this helps.

Thanks guys, I convinced a friend to take me to the pet shop this weekend. I'll get the test kit when I go. I'll also do my best to do a daily 10% water change for a week or two.

Thanks for all your help, and at least putting my mind a little bit at ease!
