Cloudy water

yea, your tank is not cycled, if it were nitrites would be zero. nitrites are toxic to fish, nitrates are acceptable in small amounts. the good bacteria you are attempting to grow with a cycle consume nitrites and convert them to less harmful nitrates. so to have any nitrites, essentially means you dont have enough bacteria to eat it.

it sounds like a bloom to me, up your water changes. also, are you testing for ammonia? very important!

We are testing daily - ammonia is 1 and nitrites .25 on our API test - so we also are doing water changes (25% every other day) - the water is much clearer today and we hope that the cycle will get established soon.

i also started getting cloudy water due to an ammonia spike. like everyone else said, 50% water changes. although, i think my water is suffering an algae bloom. it always appears cloudy white before it darkens to green.

The best thing you can do now is try and get some filter media from an established tank and some gravel also if you can. Buy as many cheap aquarium plants as you can and float them. They'll take up the ammonia, nitrite and nitrate. When your tank is totally cycled (ammonia and nitrite at 0) you can add fish but very slowly. After you've done the above please research what the ammonia and nitrite will do to the fish so that you can recognize the symptoms. Add some aquarium salt if the nitrites cause the fish problems.

We're neighbours by the way, I'm in Mississauga. Welcome and good luck!
