Folks,

I bought 3 clown loach (CL) yesterday from LFS. The gal who sold me the fish seriously warned me that the CLs are very likely to get ick. And when they got ick I might have to be careful in treating them. Here are my questions.

1. I know ick is a real threat to all fishes; however, just how much more likely CL will get it comparing with other fishes? And why?

2. My understanding is that fish get ick from other sick fishes. However, I was told by the gal CL can get ick from tapped water. Is this true? Where does ick exist?

3. When CLs do get ick, what are some of the good med for them. I know they are scaleless so normal dose might easily kill them.

1. Why are Clown Loaches so susceptible? It might be that their reduced scales make them more vulnerable. Or it might even just be that they arrive from SE Asia stressed out. Or it could just be an anecdotal perception we've grown used to.

2. You're right, they're wrong. Ich is a particular parasitic organism. I've collected Ich lifestyle details and links to Ich biology and epidemiology etc at www.skepticalaquarist.com

3. Go for the warmth/saltbath treatment as the least toxic. It might be good to pass your new Loaches through this gentle regimen right now, during their quarantine. The saltbath will also rid them of other ectoparasites that might be trouble later.
